Walkers discover 'new mountain' in Wales

A new mountain has been found in a beauty spot by three intrepid walkers.

It was thought that Mynydd Graig Goch was 1,998ft high - 2ft too low to be a mountain.

But friends John Barnard, Myrddyn Phillips and Graham Jackson measured it and found it was actually 2,000ft and 6in. It was now been upgraded.

Myrddyn, of Welshpool, Powys, said: "It's fantastic. Nothing like this had happened before."

The friends spent two hours taking 7,000 satellite measurements of the peak in Snowdonia in an echo of the film The Englishman Who Went Up a Hill But Came Down a Mountain.

Myrddyn said: "Winds of 40 to 50mph made things quite difficult for us and it rained, but it was worth it."

Ysgol Rhoscolyn won the first ever National Outdoor Activity Award for Primary Schools last year.

We're currently in our second year of piloting the programme, promoting outdoor activities in primary schoolsthroughout Wales.

Our pilot scheme included kayaking, canoeing, climbing, abseiling, skiing, team building and adventure games and also residential courses in different activity centres. We had a great time! Click on the links for more information about the pilot scheme:

The Optimist is a small, single-crew sailing dinghy for children up to the age of about 15. Nowadays boats are usually made of fiber reinforced plastic, although wooden boats are still built. The Optimist was designed in 1947 by Clark Mills. It is one of the most popular sailing dinghies in the world, with over 132,000 boats officially registered with the class and many more built but never registered. The Optimist is also recognized as an International Class by the International Sailing Federation. The Optimist is a pram, meaning a boat with a flat bow. It has good handling characteristics despite its squared-off appearance.

Sail

The single sail of the Optimist is sprit-rigged. Two battens stiffen the leech.

Hull

Just in front of a bulkhead, which partitions the boat nearly in half, is the daggerboard case. Right behind it on the centerline of the hull floor are attached a pulley and ratchet block. These anchor the sheet and its pulley on the boom directly above.
