Ski Team reaches New High

Ysgol Rhoscolyn's 2008/9 Ski Team proved their mettle this week during the Snowsport Wales' North Wales Schools Skiing Championships at Plas y Brenin.  Our Year 5 and 6 youngsters gave their best against strong competition from other schools.  The regional schools event was a two run Slalom Competition, with Rhoscolyn team members supported by parents and on-lookers as they made their way to the start. The team members produced a faster second run, setting personal bests for the season. The team wish to thank their manager, Mr Simon Bromley for his support and special coaching session held earlier on in the week.

Tim Sgio yn cyrraedd yr entrychion!

Dangosodd Tim Sgio Ysgol Rhoscolyn eu gwerth yr wythnos hon tra'n cystadlu ym Mhencampwriaeth Snowsport Cymru i Ysgolion Gogledd Cymru ym Mhlas y Brenin.  Bu'r unigolion o Flwyddyn 5 a 6 yn rhoddi o'u gorau yn erbyn cystadlu brwd ysgolion eraill.  Roedd rhaid sgio slalom ddwywaith yn y gystadleuaeth, a bu Tim Ysgol Rhoscolyn yn falch iawn o'r gefnogaeth a gafwyd gan rieni a chefnogwyr.  Bu i'r tim sgio'n gyflymach yn yr ail ras, gan osod amseroedd cyflym iddynt eu hunain ar gyfer y gaeaf.  Hoffai'r tim ddiolch o galon i'w Rheolwr, Mr Simon Bromley am ei gefnogaeth a'i sesiwn hyfforddiant yn gynharach yn yr wythnos.

The Optimist is a small, single-crew sailing dinghy for children up to the age of about 15. Nowadays boats are usually made of fiber reinforced plastic, although wooden boats are still built. The Optimist was designed in 1947 by Clark Mills.  It is one of the most popular sailing dinghies in the world, with over 132,000 boats officially registered with the class and many more built but never registered.  The Optimist is also recognized as an International Class by the International Sailing Federation.  The Optimist is a pram, meaning a boat with a flat bow.  It has good handling characteristics despite its squared-off appearance.

Sail

The single sail of the Optimist is sprit-rigged. Two battens stiffen the leech.

Hull

Just in front of a bulkhead, which partitions the boat nearly in half, is the daggerboard case. Right behind it on the centerline of the hull floor are attached a pulley and ratchet block. These anchor the sheet and its pulley on the boom directly above.
