Glan Llyn. Wednesday, September 3rd

Arrived safely, spending the afternoon sailing on the lake. The weather's a challenge - but we're winning!

2008_1006glanllynhwylio0185 by you.

Wedi dysgu clymu rhaffau a chodi hwyliau, a sut mae concro'r llyn mewn cwch hwylio. Pawb yn iawn, ac yn cael digon o hwyl.... amser swper rwan... Sesiwn geufadu yn y pwll - gwisgo sgertiau atal dwr a dysgu troi drosodd - a dibynnu ar eich met i'ch achub!   Noson wych...nos da bawb!

Dydd Iau, Medi 4ydd

Dim llawer o wynt, pawb yn nerfus ond yn edrych ymlaen yn ofnadwy.  Jenks yn ein helpu i osod hwyliau'r Optimists, neu'r Opis.  Dysgu hwylio yn ôl a blaen - dim llawer o wynt a pawb yn teimlo'n hyderus, mwy o wynt os gwelwch yn dda!

Pnawn Iau

GORMOD O WYNT!    Hwyliau a pawl yr Opis a'r Toppers yn troelli a bron a tharo pawb ar eu pennau - fawr o steil gan neb.  Hyd yn oed yr athrawon yn troi drosodd ac yn gorfod nofio!!!  Jenks yn cadw rheolaeth ac Eryl yn brysur iawn yn y gwch achub!!!  Ofn ar bawb ond amser cwl.  Da ni'n hoffi hwylio! G. Thomas yn dangos ei hun ac yn hwylio i mewn ac allan rhwng cychod pawb (ond doedd neb yn gwybod ei bod allan o bob rheolaeth!!!).  Bowlio deg ac yna anferth o swper mawr - pawb yn haeddu boliad da o fwyd.

Bore Gwener, Medi 5ed

Gormod o wynt i hwylio, felly cynnau tan mewn TiPi, rhostio marshmallows ar y tân a bod yn ddewr ar y cwrs rhaffau uchel.  Diolch Glan Llyn am dridiau gwych -  a diolch am y tystysgrifau Lefel 1 RYA.  Laughing

Learnt how to tie ropes and raise the sail, and how to conquer the lake in a sailing boat. Everyone in good spirits and having an excellent time...it's almost supper time...and after that we've an indoor kayaking session where we'll learn to capsize and our friends will hopefully turn our boats upright..... goodnight!

Thursday, September 4th

Not a great deal of wind, but we're all a bit nervous and looking forward to sailing the Optimists and Toppers by ourselves. Learnt to sail around a buoy and back to the jetty - a little more wind would be ideal as we're all pretty confident now!

Thursday afternoon

TOO MUCH WIND!  The Opi's sail and boom spin around our heads - we don't look very cool now!!!  Even the teachers capsize and go for a swim!  Jenks in control and Eryl whizzing around in the safety boat.  We're all a little bit scared but really enjoying ourselves and learning lots.  We love sailing!  G. Thomas being a show-off, zipping in and out between boats and sailing competently - nobody knew she was way out of control!!!  Evening - Ten pin bowling and a well deserved supper - another great day of sailing!

Friday morning, 5th September

Too much wind for sailing, so we learned how to light a fire in the Teepee, and roasted marshmallows as a snack before venturing out on the High Ropes Course.  Gosh, we're brave!!

Thank you Glan Llyn for a great 3 days - and thank you for awarding us our first ever RYA Level 1 certificates. Cool

The Optimist is a small, single-crew sailing dinghy for children up to the age of about 15. Nowadays boats are usually made of fiber reinforced plastic, although wooden boats are still built. The Optimist was designed in 1947 by Clark Mills.  It is one of the most popular sailing dinghies in the world, with over 132,000 boats officially registered with the class and many more built but never registered.  The Optimist is also recognized as an International Class by the International Sailing Federation.  The Optimist is a pram, meaning a boat with a flat bow.  It has good handling characteristics despite its squared-off appearance.

Sail

The single sail of the Optimist is sprit-rigged. Two battens stiffen the leech.

Hull

Just in front of a bulkhead, which partitions the boat nearly in half, is the daggerboard case. Right behind it on the centerline of the hull floor are attached a pulley and ratchet block. These anchor the sheet and its pulley on the boom directly above.
